The play is inspired by Angela Carter’s fairy tales, and is the result of a year-long process of script development following interviews with library reading hacks and Lancashire´s library apprentices.
Speaking ahead of the Lancashire dates, Lyndsey Wilson, Programme Manager for Spot On, explained the reasoning behind commissioning the piece:
“This show is an ambitious solo piece that pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved with one performer. Technology, live projections, live-looped music and physical theatre are all performed live on stage by one actor.
She added: “We wanted to really explore what a show specifically created for library venues could do, technically and theatrically. We’re delighted with the show that Stute Theatre have created and the audience reaction has been fantastic. It’s remarkable that one woman in a Citroen C1 can arrive at any venue and bring such magic. See it or book it while you can!”
Using music, original songs, a host of hilarious characters and a rich, poetic spoken-word script, this fast-paced show explores folk tales through the eyes of an 18-year-old young woman called Scarlet. The show is written in rhyming couplets, the style of renaissance theatre, but in the mouth of an 18 year old from a Manchester suburb it brings a modern and contemporary twist.
The show forms part of Spot On Lancashire’s Autumn season of touring, taking professional arts events to village halls and libraries, and now pubs, across the county.
