Is the Kickstart Scheme right for your business?

If you have less than 30 placements available, get involved with the Kickstart scheme.

We’ve previously let you know that the Government has announced a £2bn package that will pay the salaries of new employees aged 16-24 for 6 months. It is called Kickstart and it is designed to help employers hire young people who are claiming Universal Credit or at risk of long term unemployment.

This scheme is important as there are high barriers to young people entering the job market. Locally we have seen a recent 64% increase in young people claiming benefits.

Newground, the accountable body for Blackburn BID and BID Member Blackburn Youth Zone (BYZ), are working together to help businesses access the Kickstart fund.

The criteria for the Kickstart fund is:

•          The fund is only accessible for employers who are able to provide a minimum of 30 work placement opportunities.

•          Employers must offer ‘wrap-around’ support for young people in placements to give them the best chance of succeeding

For many employers, this target of 30 is just not possible. That’s why Newground & BYZ are teaming up to form a consortium of employers who would be able to offer one or two placements. On your behalf, BYZ and Newground will act as an intermediary to access the funding and find the right young people for you.   In addition, BYZ and Newground can provide this ‘wrap-around’ support for you, providing in-work mentoring, soft skills development and employability skills.

Please contact nic.mcgrath@newground.co.uk as soon as possible if you would be willing to provide 1 or 2 jobs for young people as part of the Kickstart initiative for 6 months (Newground & BYZ will apply for the grant on your behalf as part of a wider consortium and provide the wrap-around support).  Remember, the salaries and NI is paid for each young person you employ on this programme.

The East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce is also offering help for Chamber members to be part of the Kickstart scheme by helping you combine your placement requirements with other Chamber members so you can join the scheme.

To find out more information and /or apply to be a part of the scheme with East Lancashire Chamber as your kickstart representative simply fill out the form at https://www.chamberelancs.co.uk/kickstart-scheme/ and a member of the Chamber team will be in touch.

If you have any specific queries regarding the Kickstart Scheme then please call the Chamber on 01254 356442.
