Heart and Soul for Blackburn recognised

The Blackburn Business Improvement District manager, who has put heart and soul into her work in Blackburn, has been honoured for making a special contribution to tourism in Lancashire.

Harriet Roberts, Blackburn BID Manager is one of three finalists who have been nominated. She now faces an online public vote on the Lancashire Tourism Awards before the winner is revealed on Thursday 9 November. The Lancashire Tourism Superstar award recognises the unsung heroes and heroines who go the extra mile for visitors. Previous winners include BBC Radio Lancashire’s John Gillmore and Sue Copp of Sandcastle Waterpark.

Harriet is credited with creating and delivering a programme of marketing and events over the last four years which have helped to change perceptions and drive footfall to the multi-million pound regenerated town centre. These include the Blackburn Heritage Festival which she grew from 1 event in 2012 to over 100 in 50 venues, Countryside Comes to Town, Here Be Dragons and the Big Blackburn Easter egg hunt. She also supported the visioning and development of the Blackburn Comic Con and Blackburn Cathedral Flower Festival and the growth of an increasingly creative and successful Christmas events.

In 2016, Harriet took the initiative in driving the town centre partnership to victory in the prestigious Great British High Street Awards and has recently become a volunteer trustee to support an £8 million fundraising project to restore the old Apollo cinema, the Blackburn Cotton Exchange.

Harriet said, ‘A big team has come together to deliver Blackburn’s road to success over the last 15 years and it’s an honour to be recognised for my small part. This is an opportunity to raise the town’s profile in a showcase of the finest that Lancashire has to offer with the Marketing Lancashire annual tourist awards. I’m pleased to be able to continue to put Blackburn on the map through the voting campaign and looking forward to representing the stakeholders at the event at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on 9 November.’
