The award-winning Blackburn in Bloom project returns for 2020 and is shortlisted for the Britain in Bloom Awards 2020!
The project to help Blackburn town centre look ‘blooming’ lovely is a partnership between Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and Blackburn BID and sees a huge investment in planters, planting and maintenance across the town centre during the summer months.
This year we’d like BID members in Blackburn town centre to be more involved with the project, especially as the theme for Britain in Bloom awards 2020 is ‘Grow Social’.
Plus the Blackburn Cathedral Flower Festival returns this year in June, and we will have thousands of visitors from across the country, and we want them to enjoy the town centre at its ‘blooming’ best!
I’m delighted to announce that there will be a competition for ‘Best Blooming Business’, with an award and prize for the best floral/plant installation in a Blackburn town centre business.
This could be a shop window display, external planting, a window box, kitchen garden or internal feature. You will be sent details of how to enter your business for the competition nearer the time, and judging will take place in August 2020.
In addition I am working with colleagues at Newground CIC, the accountable body for Blackburn BID, to develop a community project with the Shadsworth Hub, supporting the community to grow plants and flowers at the Greensleeves Community Allotment, which can then be displayed on and around businesses in the town centre as part of Blackburn in Bloom. Using containers collected as part of Newground’s Re-Use project, community volunteers will create ‘terrariums’ or mini-gardens, which can be displayed inside or outside BID businesses.
If you would like a community planted terrarium to display as part of Blackburn in Bloom, and/or if you have planter(s) previously supplied by Blackburn BID which you would like re-planting by the community as part of this project, please contact me as soon as possible so that I can make arrangements for this.
