Festive season kicks off in Blackburn with Christmas lights switch on

Blackburn is sparkling with bright Christmas lights after crowds of people gathered into Town Hall Square for the annual switch-on last night.

Popstar and Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon joined a cavalcade of stars and musicians to push the big button at 7pm, which was followed by an impressive firework display.

Organised by the Blackburn Business Improvement District in partnership with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, the festivities got underway in the town centre at around 4pm with warm ups by local artists.

Visitors young and old were able to get into the festive spirt early thanks to live music from former X Factor contestant Jake Quickenden, Britain’s Got Talent stars Henry Gallagher and Ella Shaw.

Compere and Phoenix Nights star Ted Robbins was joined on stage by other star guests including super bike champion Carl Fogarty, children’s television show characters Small & Tiny from the Clangers and soap stars Peter Gunn and Alex Bain.

Blackburn’s own ‘Pop Up Princesses’ brought joy to young minds with their performance of the hit ‘Let It Go’ from Disney’s Frozen at the annual switch which was hosted by The Bee Radio.

Last night was also the first of the town’s late-night shopping evenings.

Manager of the Blackburn BID, Harriet Roberts, said: “The Christmas lights add to the magical atmosphere in the town and signify the start of the festival season in Blackburn. The success of this event shows how well town centre partners can work together to make bigger and brighter events for visitors.”
