Social gatherings of more than six people will be illegal in England from Monday amid a steep rise in coronavirus cases across the country.
The change in the law will ban larger groups of 6+ meeting anywhere socially indoors or outdoors, the government has said, but it will not apply to schools, workplaces or Covid-secure weddings, funerals and organised team sports (subject to local restrictions in place). It will also not apply where a household includes more than 6 people.
It will be enforced through a £100 fine if people fail to comply, doubling on each offence up to a maximum of £3,200. Until now the police have only had powers of enforcement for gatherings which exceeded 30.
There will be a press conference from the Prime Minister later today at 4pm with more information, so I will update you further after this.
