Footfall Increase for Christmas Lights Switch On event

Our Christmas Lights Switch On event took place on Saturday 27 November.

Below is a brief summary of the event for you.  If you’ve any feedback about the event please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

  • Due to the severe weather of Storm Arwen we had to make some changes to the event – we had a different stage, no digital screen, and we changed the firing location of the fireworks.  We were able to deliver a safe and successful event which seemed to be received really well by the crowds.
  • We estimate approx. 3000 people for the finale show and fireworks – an increase on 2019 – plus there was a large crowd throughout the afternoon so overall visitors for the event will be much more.
  • Springboard footfall data shows an increase in footfall of +4.2% compared with the Christmas Lights Switch On of 2019.  Compared with the same day last year (when there was no Lights Switch on event) we saw an increase in footfall of +274.7%.  This is really positive, especially when taken into the context of motorways and roads being closed, trains being cancelled and freezing temperatures on the day.
  • Gareth Malone performed with his community choir and the event was filmed for BBC Two as part of a documentary which will be shown on TV in the run up to Christmas (hopefully Christmas Eve).
  • Pop Up Entertainment performed 3 festive shows bespoke to Blackburn, in amazing costumes.
  • The event also featured Katrina’s Dance Academy who performed Six and Hairspray the musical; KGH’s panto cast; Blackburn & Darwen Brass band; and BYZ’s young DJs Kori & Lennon, who were all amazing.  The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen helped with the countdown to the switch on and closed the event.
  • The Christmas lights were switched on at 6pm whereupon we had a fantastic fireworks display for 7 minutes which included pyrotechnics on Wilko roof.
  • You can find a full album of photos of the event on our Experience Blackburn facebook page (Illuminate Blackburn album).
