The long anticipated multi-million pound Cathedral Quarter area has now been completed. The new offices and restaurants have been built surrounded by an attractive green space and events plaza. Step out of the newly refurbished railway station and you’ll see the transformation of Blackburn taking place before your eyes in the multi-million pound development called Cathedral Quarter. Darwen Street is home of the BBC in Lancashire and the county’s cathedral both situated on the main highway to some of the town’s longest established family traders including Hobkirk Sewing Machines, Ainsworths the Jewellers and Edmondsons furniture department store. With the new Heatley’s Emporium, furniture stores, the bed centre and a range of specialist suppliers. Darwen Street is also the route to Blackburn Rovers Football Club, the Vue Cinema and Blackburn Ice Arena
Look out for the blue plaque marking early cinema pioneers, Mitchell & Kenyon on this pedestrianised route which leads towards King Georges Hall, the town’s main concert hall and theatre. Specialist traders provide an eclectic mix from including comic books at The Bat Cave and a variety of food outlets and cafes. The world’s largest guitar wall is at Reidy’s Home of Music is on Nab Lane.
Surprises here include famous label quality childrenswear at Petit Fashion, boutique fashions for both men and women, upmarket independent jewellers and a vintage themed tea room in what was the oldest pub in Blackburn. Not far from here, on King William Street, you’ll find a traditional gents’ barbers and a first class florist all offering good old fashioned personal service and a great Blackburn welcome.

You don’t need to travel ‘out of town’ to enjoy the convenience of big stores in large shopping parks. Townsmoor Retail Park is just south of the town centre and next to the Peel Leisure and Retail Park. Stores here include Argos Extra, a large Boots store with pharmacy, NEXT (with Costa coffee shop outlet), Carphone Warehouse and TK Maxx. This is also where you’ll find the Blackburn Arena, the North West’s Regional Centre of Ice Skating Excellence.
